Located in the centre of Faro, this museum was originally housed in the beautiful former convent of Santo Antonia dos Capuchos until it moved to its current location in 1969. The Faro Municipal Museum is the second oldest museum in the Algarve and was opened in 1894 in honour of Henry the Navigator, a former hero of Sagres. The museum displays archaeological finds from prehistory to the present day and covers all the major periods of the Algarve, including the Roman and medieval periods. In 2003 and 2005, the museum was awarded the prize for the best museum in Portugal.
